The Future of Film - Week 9

Image
Film is a constantly evolving art form and I believe in recent years it has taken a turn for the worse. The blockbuster has completely taken over and artistic films are becoming sparse. This is because of the large amounts of money the standardized action movies have the ability to make. Production companies know that these films are guaranteed to box office hits and will bring in large amounts of revenue. Cinema has become an industry and money is what runs it. While there are still independent film makers working towards producing movie of their own but they don't often gain a large following. This is why I believe that in the future we will continue to see fewer and fewer artistic films and more and more blockbusters.

The White Walkers - Week 6

Image
This week tasked us with analyze a photograph and point out some things we noticed. This image is a screen shot from the popular HBO series Game of Thrones. This character would be considered one of the main antagonist in the story line. This picture is a medium close up shot and shows the great work that was done computer generated images. This whole character is done with CGI and the ability to see him in such a close shot shows the talented work that goes into the editing of this show. One other thing I found made this picture captivating is the power character seems to hold within it. We see chaos ensuing in the background but a cold star of the white walker and a powerful stance with his arm raised in the air almost to summon those behind him to follow his lead. This image is definitely an interesting one and I hope I did not spoil the show at all for you while describing it.

Fields Model - Week 3

Image
Field believes that screen plays and films have three acts, the first act is usually about 20 to 30 pages and sets the story up for the reader/viewer. Act 1 is intended to introduce characters and important points for the rest of the story. I watched the first few minutes of the first Harry Potter movie in order to put this theory to the test and I believe it is true to an extent. We get the general sense that Harry is an orphan and has some secrets to hide. We then learn that he has magical powers on the families trip to the zoo. These are two very important parts of the multi-part series, however, the first 10 minutes are not a great enough example as to what happens in the film. If we continue on another 10 minutes we see letters from Hogwarts arriving and things begin to come together. We gain a general understanding that Harry Potter is a gifted child whom is off to learn how to use his powers within the first 10 to 20 minutes of the film which is ultimately what the whole ...

Camera Movement - Week 7

Image
This short clip from Friends does not include much camera movement what so ever. The camera mostly cuts back and forth between stationary actors. I found the camera most often moves when characters are leaving the scene for example when Phoebe storms out in frustration the camera pans out and follows her to the door in order for viewers to see what is happening. Phoebe herself is moving in order to advance the plot which then moves to Joeys audition. Again there is not much movement in the camera as all actors are stationary however at the 3 minute mark when the director gets frustrated with Joeys and states he is leaving we then see the camera pan out yet again. In this clip the camera movement is mostly centred around when individuals are walking out of the scene, other wise it is simple cuts between characters. I believe this may be because this is a sitcom and does not call for ground breaking cinematography.

Plot Points - Week 5

Image
For this exercise I will be using the film "Pineapple Express" Staring Seth Rogan and James Franco Act 1 - Plot Point Plot point number one in this film would have to be the scene when Seth Rogans character goes to Ted Jones house (the villian) and watches a murder, Jones then picks up a joint Seth Rogans character was smoking and finds the rarest weed that only he sells beginning the man haunt. This is when the story goes from a friendly movie about a stoner with a dead end job and a high school girlfriend to a full blown action move. Happens about 25 minutes into the movie. Act II - Plot Point After the Seth Rogan and James Franco's characters have been on the run for some time they get into an argument and split ways, this is the plot point that brings act II of the film to an end. It happens at about 75 minutes into the film and allows for the final act to commence as it results in the kidnapping of Franco which ultimately leads Seth Rogan to begin his...

Week 3 - Question 3

This week in the news I found an interesting story regarding the treatment of an United Airlines passenger. The man was forcibly removed and injured an elderly man because they overbooked a flight and wanted to use this mans seat for employees, however he would not leave. What I found interesting about this story is that police officers actually forcibly removed the man because the airline asked him to, they had no right to do this and should have not have blindly followed the instructions on the airline employ. I am extremely interested in seeing how the legal battle of this incident will play out I interviewed and learned about his summer job working with under privileged youth at a summer camp in Belleville. I always knew this is what he did over the summer but never really got to hear many stories about what actually happened at work since we live so far and people our age often don't really talk about our part time jobs. It was a brief discussion as he was busy studying for ...

Week 1 - Story Time!

Image
The three men in this photo are old friends, Jeremy, the one in the green vest had decided they go on a trip across Canada as their old friend on the right, Robert, had been having some health difficulties of late. The man in the middle is Ryan the mastermind of this plan. The three had grown up on the same street and had been close family friends throughout their entire lives even though they varied in age. They all went to the same university and after the last one graduated they decided to go on a cross country trip. This is why this final trip meant so much to them as it was most likely the last extended period they would get to spend with their best friend Robert.
